Ma'at: The Ancient Principle of Truth, Order & Balance.
Personified as a goddess, Maát is depicted as a woman wearing an ostrich feather on her head, The feather, a symbol of the principles she represents. She controls the movement of the stars and the seasonal flooding of the Nile River, Maát also held the codes of tradition and customs. For all Egyptians to live in a happy, prosperous and peaceful environment, they had to live within the order established by Maát.
At death one's heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at.
This symbolic weighing of the heart against the feather of truth (Maát) was performed to establish the righteousness of the deceased.
